Biden is 'healthy, active, robust' White House doctor says after the president's annual physical amid concerns about Biden's age and memory
The president received his annual physical at Walter Reed amid concern about his faculties in the wake of special counsel Robert Hur's report.
- Joe Biden received his annual physical Wednesday at Walter Reed Medical Center.
- In keeping with tradition, the White House released a brief statement about the exam.
- Biden's health is one of the biggest concerns he faces ahead of November's election.
The White House physician said President Joe Biden is "a healthy, active, robust 81-year-old male" following Biden's annual exam.
"He continues to be fit for duty and fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations," Kevin O'Connor, the president's physician, wrote in a summary released by the White House.
Biden spent most of the afternoon at Walter Reed Medical Center completing his third annual physical since his election. The president's health is receiving even more attention ahead of November's election, with polling showing that a large majority of Americans are concerned about whether the 81-year-old would be up to the rigors of a second term in office.
Special counsel Robert Hur recently concluded that a jury would find Biden to be a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," explaining why he did not pursue charges against the president for improperly handling classified information. The White House and Biden's lawyers have vigorously disputed Hur's conclusion about the president's memory, arguing that the special counsel crossed the line in putting such conjecture into his lengthy report.
In responding to the report, Biden confused the presidents of Mexico and Egypt, a flub that occurred after the president had mentioned long-dead foreign leaders instead of their current counterparts. Some Democrats have also expressed concern about the oldest president in the nation's history.
"We're having that conversation and that debate about the Supreme Court," Rep. Kate Porter, a California Democrat, told Politico about age limits. "And I think it's hypocritical for us to not be thinking about having it given that we have some of the same long term representation that we have."
Biden has tried to assuage voters' concerns about his age with a mixture of humor and reminders that his almost certain challenger, former President Donald Trump, is nearly as old as him.
"Number one, you gotta take a look at the other guy, he's about as old as I am, but he can't even remember his wife's name," Biden told host Seth Meyers during an appearance on Meyers' late-night show on Monday.
Biden is referencing an episode during Trump's speech at a conservative political event where he called out "Mercedes" from the stage. While some tried to argue that Trump forgot the name of former first lady Melania Trump, the context suggests he was instead shouting out a former Trump White House official.
Biden also argued that the likely rematch between him and Trump, who is 77, is actually about who has a better plan for the nation.
"Number two, it's about how old your ideas are," Biden said. "Look, I mean, this is a guy who wants to take us back."
