I'm a Gen Z interior designer who loves shopping at Dollar Tree for bargains on items I use to decorate my space. However, there are also some things I wouldn't buy at the store.

Here are four items I'd get and five things I'd skip at Dollar Tree.

Ribbons are essential for my DIY projects.

Dollar Tree's ribbon collection is extensive, so you might need to rummage through a few boxes to find the roll you want.

After some digging, I usually find ribbon in the perfect color and size for my next project.

Sleek, clear vases are staples when I'm designing a space.

Dollar Tree has many clear-glass vases that can complement most decor styles and instantly elevate a space. Throw in some fresh flowers, and you have a great new piece.

I grab notebooks and other office supplies that fit my aesthetic.

Dollar Tree carries a huge selection of notebooks, planners, and pens in several colors, finishes, and styles. I keep a couple of empty notebooks around my house, so I always have one nearby.

I prefer the solid-colored notebooks because they look timeless and easily coordinate with other belongings.

Command strips are necessary for hanging wall art without making a permanent change.

My location sells a few options, including classic adhesive strips and hooks.

On the other hand, I typically skip the faux flowers.

Instead of opting for flimsy, brightly colored plastic containers, I'd recommend going with clear or natural-wood bins.

The bright colors can look tacky, which is the last thing I want when I'm organizing a space.

I don't trust the quality of the picture frames at Dollar Tree.

There are plenty of places to get high-quality picture frames, but Dollar Tree doesn't seem to be one of them. The frames I find here feel cheap and would probably downgrade a space.

For budget-friendly options, I recommend finding frames at antique markets or on Facebook Marketplace instead.

I won't give into flimsy decor with quotes.

I highly encourage skipping over decor items with sayings like "home sweet home" or "live laugh love." I find they look cheap and can create a cluttered feeling.

Instead, decorate your space to feel like "home sweet home" by investing in timeless decor.

I won't buy anything from the towel section.

The low price tag of the towels at Dollar Tree may be enticing, but I don't think they'd stand the test of time. The ones at my location felt hard and scratchy, as if they'd start to fall apart after a few washes.

I've found good-quality towels at Ikea and HomeSense, proving that they don't have to come with a hefty price tag.

I recommend looking for towels with stitching and high-quality materials.
